Hinglish spellings that trip up converters, and how AksharKosh reads them

mai, main or mein? h or hai? bhot or bahut? The Hinglish spellings that confuse converters, and how AksharKosh turns them into the right Hindi.

There is no single way to write Hindi in English letters. One person types bahut, another bohot, a third just bht. The same few letters can also stand for different Hindi words. That is why many Hinglish converters get everyday messages wrong. Here are the spellings that cause the most trouble, and how AksharKosh reads them.

mai, main and mein

In chat, mai and main usually mean मैं (I), and mein means में (in). But people mix them up all the time, and a converter that only looks at one word at a time will too. AksharKosh looks at the words around it:

  • mai ghar ja raha hu → मैं घर जा रहा हूँ
  • ghar mein koi nahi hai → घर में कोई नहीं है
  • main kal aaunga → मैं कल आऊंगा

h, hai and hain

Typing h for है saves a few keys, and it is everywhere in chat. AksharKosh knows it: wo ghar pe h becomes वो घर पे है. With Fix grammar ticked it also picks हैं or हूँ when the sentence needs it, so hum log aa rahe h becomes हम लोग आ रहे हैं.

Short chat spellings

A good converter has to read the way people actually type, not only dictionary spellings:

  • acha toh kal milte hai → अच्छा तो कल मिलते हैं
  • kuch nahi hua → कुछ नहीं हुआ
  • kyunki baarish ho rahi thi → क्योंकि बारिश हो रही थी
  • bhot, bohot and bht → बहुत

Same letters, different words

Some spellings are honestly ambiguous. kaha is कहा (said) in usne kya kaha and कहाँ (where) in tum kaha ho; AksharKosh gets both from the sentence. When it is not sure, it highlights the word. Click it and you get the other spellings to choose from.

Names and words you always write your own way are a different case. With a plan or a word pack you can add them to My dictionary once, and AksharKosh uses your spelling every time, in both directions.

And the other way round

Sometimes you have Hindi and need Hinglish, for a caption or for someone who can’t read Devanagari. The Hindi to Hinglish converter writes it the way people type in chat:

  • मैं घर जा रहा हूँ → main ghar ja raha hoon
  • क्या हाल है → kya haal hai
